As we approach the end of the year, we’re taking a moment to look back and celebrate the moments that shaped our year in 2025. None of this would have been possible without our dedicated team, incredible partners, and supportive clients – thank you. We’re so proud of what we’ve accomplished together, and excited about what’s ahead.
Across the UK and Ireland, our work continued to support the transition to a Net Zero economy through projects in the power, energy, renewables, and railway sectors. Alongside this technical progress, our team grew, our culture strengthened, and our commitment to sustainability deepened.
This reflection highlights the people, projects, and experiences that defined our year.
A growing, collaborative team
With a team that is agile, ambitious, and collaborative, we continued to partner closely with clients to understand their aims and deliver projects that matter.
WCS welcomed 18 new colleagues across engineering, design, and project support roles this year, including the addition of Kirsty Glover to our senior leadership team as Associate Director.
Whether you’re just starting out or looking for the next challenge, WCS offers a place to build a career where your voice is valued, your work creates impact, and your future is supported. Click here for our latest vacancies.
Celebrating milestones and career growth
Our commitment to structured development and clear pathways for progression was reflected in the achievements of many team members:
- Dr Natalja Petkune stepped into a Director role
- Victor Lupusor, Kyi Hnin Thwe, Michael Allan, and Mohamed Omar advanced into senior engineering roles
- Joseph Darier and Celine Mahfoud progressed from graduate civil engineers into new positions
- Shane Govender and Ricardo Villamil were promoted to Principal Civil Engineer roles, with Shane also achieving Chartered status with the ICE through Mutual Recognition with ECSA and SAICE
Our culture – one that encourages ambition, curiosity, and shared learning – underpins every milestone. As Mohamed reflects: “Since joining WCS, I’ve been given incredible opportunities to grow, learn, and take on leadership roles in various complex schemes.”
We are also proud that four of our team members are now qualified to serve as Temporary Works Coordinators (TWC) on projects. In this role, they take responsibility for the overall planning and approval of the design, implementation, and dismantling of the temporary works required on a project, coordinating activities across multiple contractors to prevent conflicts and integrating temporary works seamlessly into the overall project schedule.

Expanding our impact across power, energy, renewables, and rail
Our agile and experienced approach helped industry leaders – including Hitachi Energy, M Group, Aureos, Murphy, UK Power Networks Services, Linxon, Volker Fitzpatrick, and SPL Powerlines – achieve successful outcomes on time, on budget, and with confidence.
Key projects include our work at Monk Fryston, one of the UK’s largest Battery Energy Storage Systems; Twin Synchronous Compensator extensions at Eccles Substation as part of a grid stability project; the Hornsea 3 Offshore Wind Farm connection at Norwich Main Substation; and the Hardy 132kV solar connection, each contributing to the UK’s growing low-carbon infrastructure network.
We also celebrated the successful demolition and replacement of the Downs Park Road Overbridge, where engineering decisions by the WCS team achieved:
- 25% reduction in embodied carbon
- 30% reduction in costs
- All delivered within a 16-day blockade
Our work on this project saw us shortlisted for the Innovation in Carbon Reduction Award and Rail Bridge Project of the Year at the New Civil Engineer Bridges Awards 2025; Mohamed was also shortlisted as the Bridge Engineer Rising Star 2025 in recognition of his contribution.
This year also saw the launch of our Rail Systems Showcase, highlighting our work on key programmes including the Piccadilly Line upgrade, the Midland Main Line electrification and modernisation, and power upgrades at Doncaster Depot, demonstrating how WCS supports the modernisation of the rail network.
We also launched our company video in 2025 that tells the WCS story: watch here.
Championing diversity and inspiring the next generation
Engineering in the UK remains a male-dominated field, with women representing just 16.9% of the engineering workforce. At WCS, we are committed to changing that. Through initiatives such as student placements, career fairs, guest lectures, mentoring programmes, participation in the Women’s Engineering Society’s Lottie Tour and the Kingston University Beyond Barriers mentorship programme, we work to inspire future engineers and create accessible pathways into the profession.
This commitment led to WCS being shortlisted for the Excellence in Outreach Award at the Inspiring Women in Construction & Engineering Awards 2025.
Women now make up 50% of our senior leadership team, reflecting our focus on building a more inclusive and representative industry. Read our Celebrating Women in Engineering series to meet some of our team members shaping major national projects and paving the way for the next generation.
We also welcomed our very first apprentice, Fortune Ebeleghe from South Thames College, who joined us through the Civil Engineering Technician programme. Learn more about Fortune’s career journey.
“These efforts reflect our belief that the future of engineering must be inclusive, representative, and open to all. We feel proud to be in a position to help bring through the next generation of engineers,” says Asa Whitfield, Managing Director.
Sharing knowledge and advancing the industry
In 2025, our team continued to contribute thought leadership across the civil engineering and infrastructure sectors. Highlights included:
Through insights and shared learning, we help raise technical standards and support clients and partners navigating increasingly complex infrastructure challenges.
Looking ahead
“From inspiring the next generation of engineers to advancing the UK and Ireland’s journey toward Net Zero, we are proud to contribute to a more sustainable and resilient built environment,” says Asa Whitfield.
“The growth of our team and the successful completion of key projects in the infrastructure sector highlight the trust placed in us by clients. As we look forward to the year ahead, we remain focused on our mission to engineer a sustainable future,” adds Asa.
